You may wonder where we came from or what the name “Canon” has to do with coffee; and who uses a word like “canon” anyway? Allow me to color that in for you.

Canon Coffee began with a challenge of sorts from my wife. Coffee has been a steadily growing interest and hobby of mine for a decade or more now, ever since I was served that first fateful latte by my sister & brother-in-law. I’ve had fun attempting various brew methods through the years, and have simply enjoyed sampling the breadth of bean offerings available from around the globe. The variations of flavor, acidity, and richness have captivated me almost from the beginning. So as my enjoyment turned into more of an obsession, my wife suggested I add a new skill to my repertoire: roasting. “Roasting?” I retorted. Nah, I’d never be able to roast anything that was up to my personal standards; it would drive me nuts trying to get it dialed in. I’ll leave that to the experts.

Yet, as months passed, this idea wouldn’t leave me alone. “Could I pull off a solid roast?” I would ask myself. I wanted to be able to answer that question, and I realized how ridiculous my excuses were.

The only way to know was to try.

So where does “canon” come into all of this?

Once I decided to give it a go, the idea of selling to friends and family immediately came to mind, with future expansion into our local community. If I enjoy and appreciate the art of a good cup of coffee, then why wouldn’t I want to make that available to as many people as possible? In working up a name for the business, I wanted it to reflect the foundational Christian convictions and beliefs that shape both me and my family. Eventually, I settled on the name Canon Coffee. A canon, by definition, is a rule or standard. In Christianity, the word “canon” is most frequently used in reference to the canon of Scripture, God’s holy word. His word is fixed, perfect, and sufficient to lead us and help us rightly govern our lives. Applied to our coffee, my desire is that “canon” will convey the pursuit of a standard of excellence in every batch we roast. While perfection in roasting may be elusive, as a Christian business owner, I want my efforts to be governed by a purposeful intention of pursuing the best in everything I do for the ultimate glory of God, because He is worth it.

Come be a part of pursuing the standard.
